- What three words describe Zodwa Mkandla?

- As the winner of the ‘International Business Woman of the Year’ how did you feel on winning that category and tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
Being recognized by other women and especially by an international women’s organization is exhilarating! It’s an honour that I can never take for granted and am grateful for . This award has opened doors for me as a business woman and has also increased my company’s visibility in the travel industry. Winning awards is something that is very important to us as an organization as it means that all the hard work that has been dedicated to developing and growing the brand is being recognised both locally and internationally. Winning has given potential clients and our customers reassurance that they are working with the right brand. It has also helped boost the team spirit within our company – every single member of my staff played their part in this award.

- If you could change one thing about what you do to make it have a greater impact, what would it be?
Worry less about what people think. The people who judge you the most are people who don’t know anything about you and judge you from what they read and see on social media but don’t know where you are coming from. When you worry about what people think, you take less risks and even miss out on opportunities. Know yourself and believe in yourself and your God and he will guide you.
- When life throws you challenges, how do you handle them?
My motto in life is “Never give up”. I have been through thick and thin to get my company where it is today and it is through perseverance that I am here today. We are all faced with challenges constantly in every area of our lives. Most people have a hard time accepting and dealing with these challenges that arise because they expect life to be easy. The truth is that you will have to deal with difficult problems throughout your life, whether it is in your personal life or career. You can’t run away from problems but embrace them and learn from them.
5. Who has been your inspiration and why?
Dr Grace Mugabe – She is a good hearted, hard working woman with a strong personality. Even though she is the First Lady of Zimbabwe, she is still able to juggle that with being a mother and a business woman. She is also a great giver and has touched so many lives in Zimbabwe especially children in need. She is full of words of wisdom be it about life or business and inspires me to be a better person who contributes to the growth of our country and our people
- How would you encourage more women to live out their dreams?
Women have a bad habit of pulling each other down. It’s time to raise awareness on women helping their female counterparts achieve their goals. I encourage women to find role models that they identify with. Many women throughout the years have inspired me in business and have guided me and motivated me to stay strong and never give up on my dreams and the vision that I have for my company. Find people whom you admire in your own communities and ask if they’ll act as your mentors. Mentors will be key to your success because they can provide advice and knowledge based on their own trials and tribulations. Stop comparing yourself to other women. We all have something unique to bring to the table and you don’t know what they have been through to get to where they are.
