In a world that is geographically divided and only connected by technology it is imperative that girls and women are well represented in this new world. During my days of high school and university, my fingers were too many to count the number of girls in classes such as Information and Technology, Design and Technology, Computer Science as well as Engineering.
Adolescent girls’ access to technology is limited by the societies, communities and families in which they live in due to mostly patriarchal beliefs such as only a boy is cable to do certain jobs while girls are incapable just because they are girls. How can we ensure that we enhance the number of girl’s and women’s involvement in technology? How can we close the existing gender inequality gap?
1.) Girls are easily inspired, once schools, institutions, colleges and universities can have female teachers and lecturers in such technological classes, there will be more girls in number.
2.) Governmental and Non Governmental Organisations should it make priority to hold seminars on girls and technology. Some women do not believe in their potential hence such seminars will build up their potential.
3.) Create female friendly lecture theatres where such classes are conducted. For example, a purple or pink lecture theatre will send a signal to girls that engineering is not only for men.
4.) There should be more media coverage on girls taking up such classes. This will inspire many others to pursue these classes.
