- What three words describe Tapiwa Dingwiza?
Industrious, creative and open-minded.
- As the winner of the ‘Fashion Designer of the Year’ how did you feel on winning that category?
It was a total surprise and I was completely stunned. Despite the surreal experience, I decided to enjoy that moment of glory. A massive appreciation to Women4Africa for such an awesome platform.
- Tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?
I am a recent graduate of Bespoke Tailoring from University of The Arts London (London College of Fashion). In 2016, I established my brand S.Vingo Bespoke as part of my University Final Major Project. The label, based in London, is recognised for using traditional Savile Row tailoring techniques and a classic silhouette which is enhanced by paying particular attention to details and fabrics. Each garment is individually handcrafted. S.VINGO Bespoke’s first collection has been inspired by childhood experiences and is characterised by craftsmanship, creativity and embossed braille personal messages for a confident, classic and playful man while the woman is distinctive, modern and dares to be different with a timeless appeal. The womenswear is also characterised by the use of exaggerated volume and shapes. The label seeks to create a relationship between a wearer and a garment by simply having a secret message, a memorable event or inspirational words written on your garment in braille. I am also a Fashion Lecturer within Further and Higher Education and I also deliver community based projects to both youths and adults.
- If you could change one thing about what you do to make it have a greater impact, what would it be?
I would work anonymously to achieve my set goals.
- When life throws you challenges, how do you handle them?
I detach myself from the scenario and have time to think with no influence. This has always worked and has helped me overcome a lot of hurdles.
- How would you encourage more women to live out their dreams?
Identify your dream, invest in your dream from all dimensions and never compare yourself to anyone. Have a teachable attitude in order to gain and further your dream.
- Who would you say has been your inspiration and why?
I have been inspired by my childhood upbringing through seeing my parents make a living out of making clothes, cardigans and bags. This drove me into a further exploration of the fashion industry through academia. Further inspiration is also drawn from famous iconic fashion designers and upcoming ones.
- What is the one thing you love most about Africa?
The rich diverse of culture and raw materials.
